Connecting With Your Community Through the Classroom: A SENCER Workshop

When instructors think about connecting their classroom instruction to local communities, many often think only of community-based learning. Community-based learning is a high-impact practice for connecting classroom instruction with local communities. But it's not the only option.

The SENCER approach provides a framework for students to contextualize their education through civic and community engagement with STEM concepts where they can see the impact of their learning and make connections beyond the classroom.

In this half-day workshop, we’ll introduce you to Science Education for New Civic Engagements and Responsibilities (SENCER), provide examples of how we’ve infused civic engagement and social justice into a variety of courses, and walk you through “SENCERizing” your own materials. You could start small with a single activity or go big by designing a course. You’ll also have a chance to connect with others with shared interests for potential collaborations.

Registrants will be provided with a zoom link for the workshop in advance.

This workshop will be facilitated by Mid-West SENCER Ambassadors, Heather Pelzel (UWisc.-Whitewater), Robert Seiser, (Roosevelt U.), Rachel Bergstrom (Beloit College), Drew Sieg (Truman State U.), Virginia McHugh Kurtz (Harper College)

This meeting will be offered through ZOOM. Here is full zoom access:
