Spring Meeting

9:00 am to 5:00 pm

The MidAtlantic SCI Spring Meeting is being hosted by Katayoun Chamany and Davida Smyth of Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts at The New School in New York City.

The theme for our meeting is “STEM, Humanities and Social Justice” in keeping with the strong Social Justice mission of the College.

To kick off the meeting we are co-sponsoring an ARTWork Presentation with our colleagues in the Arts at Lang, showcasing David Rothenberg who sits at the intersection of art and science and is located at the NY Institute of Technology. His presentation will be  the night before the SENCER Meeting to kick it off at 6:00pm on April 4th. This is a public event so please save the date and spread widely.

We are no longer accepting submissions for talks, posters, workshops or fireside chats, but you're welcome to attend.

You are invited to submit proposals for Short Talks (30 min), Workshops (90 min), Poster sessions (60 min) or Fireside chat (30-60 min) informal discussions. See below for details for each session. Light refreshments will be served for breakfast and beverages available during the Fireside Chats. You will be on your own for lunch with opportunities to explore neighborhood eateries with colleagues.

For all submissions, please include title, authors, institutions, and a 250 word abstract.

Abstracts submitted prior to February 8th will have priority as well as those from the New School.

Poster = 60 min - Posters will highlight novel research and education work in the area of STEM, Humanities and Social Justice.  Poster display area is 36 inches high by 48 inches wide.  

Short Talks = 30 mins (20 and 10 for questions) - Presentations should introduce attendees to innovative and engaging strategies to help students build their awareness and understanding of new vocabulary, concepts, and interdisciplinary ways of thinking in STEM, Humanities and Social Justice. Topics could include, but are not limited to: (a) innovative cross-disciplinary teaching techniques or strategies; (b) novel assessment tools or concept inventories; (c) cross-disciplinary based educational research; (d) metacognition; or (e) equity, diversity, and inclusivity.

Fireside chat = Informal discussions led by moderators in focused areas of importance to faculty engaged in the teaching of STEM, Humanities and Social Justice. Topics will be chosen from those submitted to SENCER during registration.

Workshop = 1 hr 30 mins Workshops will provide hands-on, active learning experiences for participants to enhance understanding of a new topic or to practice a new skill that is of current importance in the realm of STEM, Humanities and Social Justice. Featuring small group work, mentoring, and guidance, workshops will allow participants to delve more deeply into the topic while addressing their unique questions and needs. Sessions could involve: 1. Instruction, practice, and problem solving; 2. Opportunities for networking, collaboration, or one-on-one consultations and 3. Professional development related to the acquisition or practice of a specific teaching skill (e.g. case studies, active learning)
